WITH only a handful of games left to play in this pre-season campaign, we host a Liverpool U21s XI on Saturday.
The Reds finished eighth in the PL2 last season, with injuries to key first-team players resulting in a number of their youth prospects being drafted into then, Jurgen Klopp's first team.
Furthermore, a good chunk of those players have joined up the first team for their pre-season tour of America, with 13 of those, technically from their U21s setup.
You may remember the Carabao Cup final when Liverpool faced Chelsea.
The Reds used four players from the U21s squad: Jayden Danns, James McConnell, Bobby Clark, and Conor Bradley. They also had other academy graduates in the squad, like Jarrell Quansah and Caoimhin Kelleher.
Jayden Danns suffered an injury in a behind-doors friendly and Bobby Clark is looking likely for a move away on loan, so it's unlikely that either of those two will feature here, unfortunately.
Players to possibly look out for:
- Calum Scanlon is a left-back and was a surprise name to be left out of the tour squad.
- Fabian Mrozek, a towering goalkeeper who has been a mainstay for the 21's.
- Carter Pinnington, centre Back, recently signed a new deal with the Reds at just 17.
With many names missing from the squad, it could be a rather fascinating game for Chorley.
After a promising display against Bolton, the Reds will provide a different challenge, with some from the age group below looking to impress ahead of their PL2 campaign this season.
This could be a real opportunity to catch a glimpse of some stars of the future. Liverpool have a proven pedigree and reputation of bringing players through their youth ranks, as shown over the last 12-months and prior, it's not a game to miss.
A word from Preecy
"This promises to be a real test, and a very different one at that. Bolton, it goes without saying was probably our toughest game of the pre-season, but, as we've seen with Liverpool, they've some excellent young talent and I've no doubt it'll be a game that benefits both.
I'd like to thank Barry Lewtas and Liverpool Football Club for fulfilling this fixture as well, they'll no doubt have seen the success and benefit from our game against Manchester City's youth players last season, they've an abundance of talent and this really isn't a game to miss!"
