Chorley Football Club can officially announce that an official Guinness World Record attempt will take place at The Grant Store Victory Park Stadium on Sunday 19th July 2026 at 2pm.
In partnership with Currys, Chorley FC will attempt to set a new world record for the most socks kicked into washing machines in one hour, raising money and awareness for Down Syndrome International and High 5
(https://www.facebook.com/HighFiveLancashire/) a local disability charity.
The challenge will see 21 washing machines positioned at Victory Park, with teams taking part in a mass one-hour attempt to kick as many rolled, mismatched socks as possible into the machines. We have over 200 people signed up to take part in this history making event!
The number 21 is central to the event, symbolising the extra copy of the 21st chromosome associated with Down syndrome. The use of odd socks also carries a powerful meaning. Odd socks are widely used to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day, representing difference, individuality and inclusion. What began as a fun Chorley FC half-time challenge has now grown into something much bigger.
The idea was inspired by a special awareness event during the 2025–2026 season, when a young supporter completed the first successful attempt using odd socks. From that moment, socks replaced footballs permanently, turning a simple matchday activity into a symbol of support, inclusion and community.
The day will also celebrate Harry, the grandson of Chorley FC manager Andy Preece. Harry, who has Down syndrome, has been part of the Chorley FC family since birth and is loved by everyone at the club. He recently captured hearts across the country after a video of him singing Someone Like You by Adele in the changing room reached more than 2.5 million views online. Harry will also be taking part in the event, making the day even more special.
The event will be family-focused and will bring supporters, schools, community groups, businesses and families together for a memorable day at Victory Park.
Chorley FC Chairman Jamie Vermiglio said:
“Chorley FC is proud to be using football and our community platform to raise awareness of Down syndrome and support two fantastic causes. This challenge started as a bit of half-time fun, but it has grown into something with real meaning. The 21 washing machines, the odd socks, Harry’s story and the charities involved all make this a very special event for the club and the wider community.”
Supporters are encouraged to spread the word, come down to Victory Park and be part of what promises to be a historic day for Chorley. As a big thank you to our supporters and local community, the first 500 spectators to come through the gates will receive a FREE ticket to be used at any of Chorley FC's remaining pre season friendlies (Altrincham FC - Tuesday 21st July or Accrington Stanley FC - Saturday 25th July).
