CHORLEY put in a strong performance to get back to winning ways in their 2-1 victory against Marine on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Mike Calveley and Harry Ibbitson were enough for the Magpies to cancel out Adam Thomas’ second half goal for the Mariners.

Andy Preece’s men started off on the front foot in the first half and in the 34th minute their pressure paid off, a great delivery by Tom Walker from a corner was met with a bullet header by Calveley at the front post and it found the back of net off of the underside of the crossbar.

In the second half though, the visitors drew themselves level, Bailey Marsden’s pass split the Chorley midfield and substitute Thomas found a pocket of space, turned and fired home from the edge of the box into the top left corner leaving Matt Urwin with no chance.

Chorley though went back on the front foot and in the 77th minute came the winning goal, a long throw by Warren Clarke was flicked on by Mark Ellis at the front post, there was a scramble in the six-yard box and eventually Harry Ibbitson was able to head the ball home.

Elsewhere there were other chances for both sides.

The first of the game was on eight minutes when a Walker corner found Mark Ellis free in the box, the defenders’ header from point blank range was saved well by Fraser Barnsley in goal for Marine.

The Mariners had a great opportunity of their own as well in the 68th minute, Finlay Sinclair-Smith broke through on the left hand side and forced Urwin into a save, Charlie Jolley got in on the rebound and Urwin pulled off a miraculous save to tip it onto the crossbar and keep the sides level at that point in the game.

Chorley’s attention will now turn to Saturday’s game against Leamington, once again at the Grant Store Victory Park Stadium.
