A message for Rhys Fenlon from everybody at Chorley FC

EVERYBODY at Chorley FC would like to take this time to send our well-wishes to former Magpie, Rhys Fenlon, who sadly announced his retirement from football this week.

Having risen through the youth ranks at Accrington Stanley, Rhys first signed for Chorley on loan in August 2022.

Making a good first impression, he scored a brace in a pre-season friendly against Wythenshawe Town within weeks of signing.

Rhys made his competitive debut for the Magpies in November of that year in the FA Trophy against Leek Town.

Having had game-time opportunities hampered by injuries, he would eventually make his move to Chorley permanent in August 2023 following his departure from Accrington Stanley.

Rhys had operations on both knees in September, which eventually lead to his return to the grass in November, where he was able to train.

After that operation was deemed unsuccessful, Rhys went under the knife again in October 2024 in an attempt to be able to play again.

A regular attendee of Chorley games and a much-loved figure by players, supporters and staff all the same, the Magpies have supported Rhys throughout this tough period and will continue to do so.

Chorley manager, Andy Preece, had the following to say in light of the news.

"I spoke to Rhys last week and he informed me of his decision. He was in a really positive mood although he had decided being footballer was not possible.

We've gone through a lot together over the past two seasons. He had two major operations which he worked so hard to come back from.

It was heart-breaking to see how much effort he put in only to break down. His body just wouldn't allow him to come back to football.

I was so happy when I managed to convince Rhys to sign for us. I watched him for Accrington reserves, he was outstanding, he was on another level.

When he got released I couldn't believe it probably was down to injuries rather than talent. He had had a few injuries but I was prepared to take the risk.

Unfortunately for Rhys he never got going. A couple of 45 minute appearances in which he scored 3 goals showed the potential he had.

You never know but I believe Rhys would have played at a very high level.

He could play off both feet had a trick and an electric burst of pace.  When he had the ball at his feet he was almost unstoppable.

I've seen a lot of players, played with and against and he's is up there with natural talent.

We won't know but what we do know is Rhys will be a success in whatever he does he has a great attitude and such a positive outlook.

I'm grateful our paths have crossed and I will be there for him."

Once again, from everybody at Chorley FC, we would like to wish Rhys all the very best for the future. Once a Magpie, always a Magpie.
