ALEX Newby’s stunning strike lit up an otherwise testing contest at Victory Park as the Magpies made in 10 points from their last four games with a 1-o win over Dagenham & Redbridge.
The game struggled to ignite for the opening half hour in bitterly cold conditions, as both sides tried and failed to probe in the final third. There were plenty of heavy, high clearances from set pieces, but little in the way of goalmouth action.
Alex Newby went closest for the home side when a corner was fed out to the edge of the box for the forward to volley at goal, only for Elliot Justham to parry behind. Chike Kandi clipped Matt Urwin’s bar from a cross for the visitors, otherwise edge of your seat stuff was at a minimum.
The Daggers should have taken the lead on 36 minutes, as the game threatened to open up. Mitch Brundle drove into the box and shot across Urwin, whose low save flicked the ball up and towards goal, before Andy Teague’s acrobatics cleared the ball off the goal line.
The second half opened with Newby heading a Blakeman cross over the bar and Mark Ross clearing off the line at the other end as Dagenham enjoyed a couple of minutes of pressure.
That pressure dropped away quickly, allowing Chorley to push on and take the lead. Charlie Vernam’s thunderous drive was tipped over by Justham, and from the resulting Martin Smith corner the ball fell to Newby whose half volley nearly took the net off from 20 yards.
The Daggers responded with plenty of pressure and a few half chances. Alex McQueen scuffed wide from 12 yards and Joan Luque fired straight at Urwin from just outside the box, but the Magpies comfortably held their lead to claim a third win in four games.
