Chorley were left to rue their missed chances on Tuesday evening after defeat to Ebbsfleet United at Victory Park.

The Magpies got off to the worst possible start, going a goal behind inside the opening five minutes after a scrappy free-kick was initially saved quite magnificently by Matt Urwin before Marvin Ekpiteta fired home from an acute angle.

Chorley were left to felt hard done by after 19 minutes after Andy Teague thought he’d scored from an Adam Blakeman corner but his close-range header was somehow cleared off the line.

There was a sense of déjà vu with half an hour on the clock, Blakeman whipping in another corner with every player bar Matt Challoner inside the box causing another goalmouth scramble, followed by another Teague header striking the post and somehow staying out before Courtney Meppen-Walters’ rebounded effort was also cleared in chaos.

Jamie Vermiglio’s side raced frantically to try and get back in the game before the break but were left to rue their own mistakes as the visitors doubled their advantage on the stroke of half-time, several efforts inside the box this time leading to Gozie Ugwu firing home the final touch.

Ebbsfleet had to wait until the 51st minute for their first corner of the match, swung in quickly from the left at pace and met by the head of Jack King who cannoned it against the crossbar. However, they didn’t have to wait much longer to effectively seal the game off as Ugwu doubled his tally for the evening on the hour mark, hammering home a smart finish from outside the box after Teague failed to clear his lines.

The visitors almost made it four in the 67th minute after a Nortei Nortey free-kick was cleared away by Ugwu who sent Alex Reid off on a foot race with Challoner, his slack back-pass was pounced upon as he beat Urwin only for his effort to strike the post and bounce away clear. With only five minutes to go the visitors dealt further damage by adding their fourth goal of the contest, Albie Morgan‘s curled effort flying past Urwin right into the top corner.
