THE Magpies were hit by two identical goals as they ended the first month of the season with defeat to Boreham Wood.
The game was very scrappy from the get-go as both teams struggled to retain possession. Billy Crellin was called upon to make two routine saves from Tyrone Marsh as the visitors sought an early advantage, but in truth, the Fleetwood Town loanee made light work of the forward’s efforts.
Chorley played some neat, expansive football when the game allowed, throwing plenty of balls into the box from wide areas, but the only effort of note was a Marcus Carver header that bobbled wide.
Then, out of nowhere, the visitors took the lead on 31 minutes. Sorba Thomas swung a left sided corner over for Marsh to head home from 10 yards.
The second, six minutes later, was a carbon copy, only this time David Stephens was the man on the end of Thomas’s deep inswinger.
Things got worse within two minutes of the restart as Matt Challoner intercepted Tshimanga’s cross (with Thomas lurking at the back post) only for the ball to deflect off Crellin and into the net.
The home side tried to push forward, forcing a number of corners in succession. Adam Blakeman and Alex Newby were both pinpoint with their deliveries, but the visitors coped admirably with the threat, allowing only one Scott Leather header anywhere near goal.
At the other end, Adam McConnell curled a beautiful free kick over the wall and against the bar as Wood briefly threatened a fourth, before Chorley grabbed a consolation through a Chris Holroyd penalty; won by the sub and dispatched with ease past Gregory.
