THE Magpies succumbed to a strong Solihull outfit on a difficult night at Victory Park against last season’s National League runners-up.
The ball spent a lot of time in the air right from the off, as the visitors looked to bombarded Chorley’s backline with long ball after long ball. The defence dealt with most of what was thrown at it, until one moment of ground game saw Paul McCallum through on goal and last season’s 26-goal man did the rest, beating Joe Anyon without a second’s hesitation.
Chorley headed, cleared and played into the forwards, but without much in the way of scoring opportunities, aside a speculative Adam Blakeman drive. Then, as half time approached, a sucker punch. Terry Hawkridge flung a corner over from the right, the unmarked Liam Daly headed back into the six yard box, and Nathan Blissett flicked home.
The game looked done within six minutes of the restart as Blissett grabbed his second of the game, stabbing home from a yard out after Daly hit the post with a header from a Hawkridge corner.
It took two minutes for a lifeline to emerge. Jake Cottrell’s ball over the top found Ntumba Massanka. The forward’s volley was brilliantly saved by by Ryan Boot, but Alex Newby was quickest to the rebound for his first of the season.
Any hope of a fightback all-but disappeared within four minutes. Jamey Osborne scampered down the right and into the box before laying the ball on a plate for Blissett to complete his hat trick.
Solihull’s fifth tally came from the spot after Massanka fouled the tricky Osborne. McCallum did the honours, sending Anyon the wrong way.
Unfortunately, Solihull hadn’t finish there. McCallum and Blissett departed, but replacements Matt Stenson and Danny Wright continued to probe up top, and after Lee Vaughan got space down the right, Wright was able to head home the full back’s cross to complete the scoring.
