Chorley FC rounded off the 2018/19 season with a Gala Dinner at the Park Hall Hotel last night, as players, management, volunteers, sponsors & fans gathered to celebrate the 135th year of The Magpies.
Sponsored by the Chorley Group, Friday’s festivities included the handing out of end of season awards. The winners were..
Top scorer & Players’ Player: Marcus Carver
Chorley’s number nine spearheaded the forward line 47 times and produced a career year in goals, finding the net 17 times (14 NLN & 3 FA Cup) to take the Club’s top scorer title. Highlights of the forward’s season included the winner against Barrow in the Fourth Qualifying Round of the FA Cup, a superb lobbed effort against Leamington & the second goal against Stockport.
Goal of the Season: Alex Newby (v Nuneaton Borough)
Alex retains the title he won last season (his audacious long range goal at York City winning the day in 2018) following a fan vote on social media that saw over 700 votes cast in less than 24 hours.
Young Player: Elliot Newby
The summer recruit from AFC Telford United slotted into an advanced midfield role alongside twin brother Alex like he’d played for The Magpies for years. The 23-year-old started 48 of Chorley’s 51 matches, sitting out just Bamber Bridge (rested), Doncaster (suspended) & Alfreton (injured), while scoring seven times including a brilliant brace against FC United on New Year’s Day.
Manager’s & Supporters’ Player: Courtney Meppen-Walter
The imposing defender returned to Victory Park in the summer and made an instant impact on the side, enjoying almost cult-like status while playing on the left side of Chorley’s mean defensive unit. Despite plying his trade two levels below the National League North last season, the 24-year-old racked up numerous impressive performances among 37 league starts and weighed in with five goals.
Club Person: Andy Teague
Already a club legend before leading the side to a third promotion in eight years, the Club’s captain leads by example both on and off the field. Edging ever-closer to 400 appearances on the back of a 48-game season, the 33-year-old centre half epitomises what the Magpie Family is all about and is a very worthy recipient of this award.
Rita Charnley Award: Josh Vosper
Presented by the late Golden Girl’s grandsons Josh & Wayne to our Commercial Manager for all his work during the 2018/19 season. Josh has been involved with The Magpies for more than a decade and is a major presence at Victory Park. As well as his role on the commercial side of the Club, Josh is also our away game photographer and a massive proponent of Chorley as a whole.
