The Magpies were stunned by a dogged Ashton United as Matthew Regan’s goal on the hour separated the two teams.

Team news

Scott Leather, Elliot Newby & Josh Wilson return to Chorley’s starting XI in place of Stephen Jordan, Jake Cottrell & Adam McGurk.

Three changes for Ashton as Aaron Chalmers, Kallum Mantack and Ryan Jennings came in to start.

Chorley: Urwin; Challoner (McGurk, 81′), Blakeman, Teague (c), Leather (Jordan, 43′), Meppen-Walter (Almond, 67′), A.Newby, O’Keefe, Carver, Wilson, E.Newby. Subs not used: Cottrell, Hooper.

Ashton United: McMahon; Crowley, Regan, Chalmers, Ashworth (c), Kay, Sheridan (Dimaio, 67′), Goulding, Mantack (Swaby-Neavin, 81′), Hobson (Reed, 67′), Jennings. Subs not used: Roberts, Tomsett.

Chorley started the game in determined mood with Alex Newby crashing a shot against the crossbar within four minutes after Josh Wilson had taken advantage of some dithering at the back by Aaron Chalmers.

Matt Urwin had to be sharp to stop Kallum Mantack on a rare breakaway for the visitors, but the pressure remained on the other goal. Alex was again denied, this time by ‘keeper George McMahon, with the rebound brilliantly blocked as Marcus Caver looked to pounce.

Wilson teed up Alex who was superbly thwarted by McMahon as the pressure continued to build, before Josh O’Keefe flashed a volley wide from the edge of the box.

The second half was a low key affair until the visitors took the lead on the hour. Sam Sheridan’s flat corner was helped onto the far post where Matthew Regan finished into an empty net at the second empty.

Quick as a flash The Magpies replied, only for the crossbar to deny Josh O’Keefe’s header from a corner. Apart from an Elliot Newby shot that went wide, Chorley mustered very little in the way of clear cut chances thereafter.
