MATCH REPORT | Six of the best for the Young Magpies

The Development Squad maintained their winning start to the season night with an impressive 6-0 win over fifth placed Barnoldswick Town.

Chorley’s under 21’s went into last night’s game with a 100% record and this was still intact after a dominant display from the young Magpies against an undefeated Barnoldswick.  The crowd, including the 1st team manager Matt Jansen casting his eye over the youngsters, would surely have been pleased with what they saw with six goals, a strong defence and an entertaining match in which Chorley were rarely threatened.

Chorley showed their intent as early as the first minute when a lovely move down the right side sent Jordan Darr into space.  He fed a first time pass into the middle to see the on rushing Connor Smith just miss out on connecting to make It 1-0.   They didn’t have to wait much longer though to get the breakthrough.  On 10 minutes there was more good work down the right involving new signing Tom Billington who again fed Jordan Darr down the wing.  He put another dangerous cross into the box which was converted at the second attempt by Jack Lenehan.

The next 20 minutes saw the game go a bit scrappy with nobody wanting to take a foothold.  Barnoldswick should have equalised with a break down the right hand side that saw a first time ball into the box.  Their number 10 got himself in between the 2 centre halves yet his looping heading went just over the bar.  This seemed to wake up the home side and broke away went down the other end.  The ball found its way to the feet of Harry Pratt on the edge of the box after good play from Jordan Darr.  Pratt jinked past his marker on to his right foot and hit an unstoppable strike into the bottom corner. The 3rd came shortly afterwards, just before half time from a corner that wasn’t properly cleared, the impressive Declan Evans turned and hit it into the bottom corner from 8 yards to leave Chorley with a comfortable 3-0 lead at half time.

The second half started as the first ended, Chorley had upped the tempo and were playing some great football to match.  The midfield the of Smith, Lenehan and Farnworth were running the game and it was only a matter of time before Chorley scored again. This came on the hour when captain Ryan Farnworth broke down the left wing; he continued his run into the box and calmly curled the ball into the far corner.   Two minutes later it was 5-0 Darr finally got the goal he deserved after slotting the ball just over the line from 2 yards after more good play out wide.

Chorley didn’t stop there. Chances were being created from all over the pitch and if it wasn’t for some good goalkeeping and wild finishing it could have been more.   Callum Darcy finished the scoring in the 86th minute - he started the move himself in his own half, playing the ball over the top for Jordan Darr to run on to.  He continued his run all the way into the box and was on hand to sweep home Darr’s cross into the bottom corner for 6-0.

An impressive display from all over the pitch, assured at the back and a killer instinct up top resulted in a very impressive performance from the young magpies.  Manager David Chadwick said after the game ‘The lads were relentless out there tonight and showed no mercy. I actually thought in the first half we looked a bit lethargic and the football wasn’t flowing like we can.  We upped the tempo in the second half and they couldn’t live with us.  Importantly for me we kept our concentration throughout and got the clean sheet Charlie and his back four deserved.’

Next Thursday sees the last of our home games before a series of away matches, as we welcome Cumbria-based Workington Town.  KO at the Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium is at 8pm.
