REPORT | Grantham Town 3 Chorley 4

Chorley progressed to the first round of this season’s Buildbase FA Trophy in emphatic style, with 4-3 reverse at Grantham Town on Saturday afternoon.

It was end to end from start to finish with both sides deeming attack the best form of defence throughout the match.

Despite a bright a start from the Magpies, it was the home side who took the lead early on. On nine minutes, Matt Challoner lost possession cheaply by his own corner flag to Grantham’s number 10 Lee Shaw. He ran at goal, side stepped Andy Teague and floated the ball in. Grantham’s Danny Meadows reached the ball before any defender and headed towards the far post. It clipped the post and went in, despite Scott Leather’s best efforts to clear it away.

The hosts took the lead but it didn’t last long, however. Ten minutes later, Nick Haughton was allowed far too much space to run at goal and have an effort from 25 yards, but Kieran Preston in the Grantham goal tipped it behind for a corner nicely. The corner was worked short, played to Jason Walker on the corner of the area, who took his time and curled a beautiful effort in the far top right hand corner of the goal.

The hosts retook the lead just eight minutes after though. The impressive Lee Shaw picked up the ball from a Chorley corner and ran at goal. Matt Challoner couldn’t catch him, despite his best efforts, and Shaw took aim from a tight angle and fired under Matt Urwin to make it 2-1.

Despite the Magpies best efforts to find a second equaliser in the first half, it was in vain and Grantham soaked up yet more pressure, to then deliver a killer blow into added time and double their lead.

The ball was lofted forward by a Grantham defender and Lee Shaw took it down well to tee himself up for a half volley from 20 yards. It was a well hit effort, and creeped past the diving Matt Urwin to make it 3-1 on the stoke of half time.

The second half began as the first, with attacking play coupled with defensive errors from both sides throughout. The Magpies halved the deficit early on, just ten minutes into the second half. Matt Challoner picked the ball up from deep and swung a fantastic cross in which beat all the defenders. Josh Wilson took aim and volleyed first time from 15 yards, and smashed it into the back of the net.

The Magpies grew in confidence and equalised for the second time in the match on 63 minutes. Marcus Carver, who had only been in the pitch a matter of minutes after replacing Matty Hughes, drilled a ball in from the right hand side. It met Josh Wilson’s head and hit the underside of the crossbar and over the line to claim his second and Chorley’s third of the afternoon.

And Chorley completed the stunning comeback right at the death as Josh O’Keefe drilled a shot first time from 20 yards out into the roof of the net.

A fantastic second half turn around from Matt Jansen’s men as we confirm our place into the first round.
