REPORT | Alfreton Town 0 Chorley 2

Nick Haughton was the star-man yet again, as Chorley collected a vital three points at Alfreton Town on Saturday writes Harry Lyons

Alfreton boasted an impressive home record going into the game, losing only one of their six matches at the Impact Arena so far this season. Yet the Magpies controlled large parts of the match and were deserved winners at full-time in Derbyshire.

It took just 43 seconds for the Magpies to register their first shot on goal. Marcus Carver slipped as he collected a ball from Haughton, yet still managed to get a shot away, but it lacked any power and was easily held by the goalkeeper.

Alfreton’s Craig Westcarr then tested Chorley’s Matt Urwin from distance, but it was well saved from the on-loan Fleetwood goalkeeper.

The Impact Arena was then stunned on 11 minutes as Nick Haughton scored his second wonder-strike in as many games, stealing all of the headlines yet again.

Noticing the home side’s goalkeeper was off his line, the 24-year-old attempted a lob from five yards inside his own half. The ball went over everyone’s heads and fell into the goal, sparking jubilant scenes on the Chorley bench.

The goal didn’t stop the Magpies quest for a second goal in the first half, with Josh Wilson and Marcus Carver demonstrating real pace and quality which Alfreton’s defence struggled to contain.

Five minutes before the interval, Chorley were awarded a penalty. A hopeful ball forward was chased down by Carver who beat the defender to it who then scampered back and brought the former Stanley man down in the penalty area.

Josh Wilson stepped up, but Chris Elliott dived down low to his right to tip it away.

Alfreton soaked up a great deal of pressure in the second half, with the Magpies struggling to find that decisive second goal.

Nick Haughton answered the call yet again five minutes from time.

A ball forward was collected by Marcus Carver, who played a well-timed pass to Haughton. A quick turn of pace got him around the defender and allowed space for a shot from just outside the area.

The on-loan Fleetwood man aimed and unleashed a powerful effort in the far bottom corner, leaving no chance for Alfreton’s goalkeeper.

Late substitutions for the Magpies, with Adam Roscoe and Paul Jarvis getting some game time, ensured Chorley collected an impressive three points on Non-League Day, ahead of the FA Cup tie vs Boston United next week.
