REPORT | Magpies slip at Spartans

Chorley suffered defeat against Blyth Spartans in their latest National League North outing at Croft Park on Tuesday night writes Josh Vosper. The deadlock was broken on 56 minutes after Buddle headed from a free-kick. Stephen Jordan received a straight red card afterwards as Maguire wrapped up the three points with six minutes left on the clock.

The game kicked off in lively fashion, although defender Scott Leather had to be substituted on 7 minutes after a collision to the head - he was replaced by Kieran Charnock. The away side had an early chance but Nick Haughton dragged his effort just wide of the post. At the other end Blyth bombarded the box but Urwin was on hand to clear the danger. Jansen's men were having to be on their guard, but they were still enjoying chances of their own from set-pieces by Blakeman, who even attempted an audacious effort from distance.

Blyth were still looking a constant threat on the counter attack, with the combination of Maguire and Dale a thorn in Chorley's side. Indeed, it was Dale who caused problems on 21 minutes and after a smart move his ball bounced back off the post. Rivers went one better seconds after and managed to find the back of the net but the flag had been raised for offside. Despite pressure the visitors looked solid and Urwin, when called upon, produced some fine saves. Spartans were creating an atmosphere as the half drew to its conclusion, as Buddle headed a powerful effort towards goal but Teague managed to clear.

The start of the second period saw Jansen's men make one change, with Paul Jarvis coming into the mix in place of Nick Haughton. And it was Chorley who looked the brighter of the two sides inside the opening stages, enjoying pressure in meaningful positions. On 53 minutes Challoner made a quick run and steered an effort towards goal, which the goalkeeper tipped over. The referee awarded a goal kick and afterwards Carver made a perfectly good tackle in the Spartans half. A set-piece was given as Buddle dived low past Urwin to take the lead. Things went from bad to worse as Stephen Jordan received a straight red card for dissent towards the official - furious at decisions he had made.

As the game approached the hour mark Chorley had claims for a penalty but the referee gave a free-kick on the edge of the box. Walker stepped up and smashed his effort straight at the wall as the team in red searched to get a foothold in the game. With six minutes remaining they were dealt a bitter blow. Blakeman mistimed his touch on the ball and Maguire took full advantage. After splitting the defence open he managed to calmly slot home and ensure three points for the impressive home side. Come full time, the travelling Magpies fell to defeat for the first time since August away at Boston United.
