REPORT | North Ferriby United 0 Chorley 2

Coming into the game on the back of two excellent home victories, Chorley were looking for a third successive three points away to bottom of the table North Ferriby United.

And the Magpies got off to a flying start when Jason Walker scored the opening goal to add to the two he scored on Tuesday night before Josh Wilson notched his third of the season with ten minutes to spare.

Matt Jansen named an unchanged side for this game following the Magpies’ impressive display against Darlington on Tuesday night.  Two-goal hero Jason Walker kept his place alongside Marcus Carver up front whilst man-of-the-match, Nick Haughton, started for the third time in eight days.

A stunning opening saw Chorley score after just three minutes.  In only the second attack Carver got a flick-on which Walker collected, rounded a defender, and fired home into the bottom left corner of Ross Durrant’s net.

The home side soon fashioned their first came in the eighth minute.  The ball was worked through to Akeel Francis but his shot was straight at Matt Urwin.  Less than a minute later Durrant saved point-blank from Adam Blakeman from six yards out.

Carver also had a shot blocked on 16 minutes, this time on the line by defender Mark Gray, after an excellent cross from Walker was spilled by Durrant.

As the game approached the 20 minute mark Callum Rzonca squandered a well-worked chance for North Ferriby striking a soft shot from outside the area which Urwin gathered.

Ferriby won a free kick thanks to Josh O’Keefe’s foul just outside the box but Curtis Bateson’s curling strike went wide of the mark during a brief spell of possession for his side.

Joe Pugh then missed a golden chance for the hosts to equalise when Urwin flapped at a cross and the ball fell kindly for Pugh but somehow he headed wide from eight yards.

Some excellent play from Chorley on the half hour ended with a corner as Carver still couldn’t find the target, striking the post with a wonderful curling effort after Walker had won the ball for him.  The resulting corner was cleared by the hosts.

Walker was then unfortunate not to receive a penalty from the referee when he went down in the box under a hefty challenge, but the man with the whistle decided to show him a yellow card for simulation as the game approached half time.

There was one last chance for Ferriby in first half stoppage time but Jake Picton’s looping header was comfortable for Urwin as the referee blow for half time.

North Ferriby started the half the brighter of the two sides but a foul on O’Keefe on 57 minutes gave Chorley a free kick 20 yards out.  After a bit of head tennis the ball eventually went wide of the post and a corner was given.  This was played short by Blakeman to Leather and from the return pass Blakeman shot over the bar.

Another chance fell to Carver on 62 minutes when Matt Challoner’s cross was controlled and struck well but the ball went narrowly wide of the post.

Midway through the second period both sides were struggling to gain control of this game.  Ferriby substitute Alberto Seidi caused a few problems for the defence with his pace and the crosses that were sent in by Chorley were comfortably dealt with.

But on 72 minutes Blakeman saw another strike blocked as Ferriby struggled to clear the ball away.  The ball went high into the air and as it fell Durrant managed to punch the ball away under pressure from two Chorley attackers.

Walker won a corner for the Magpies with 12 minutes left as his strike got a slight deflection to send it wide.  The ball was played out but Andy Teague was able to latch on to the loose ball inside the area and he played it back for Wilson to fire home on 80 minutes.

Kyle Dixon tried his luck with a curling strike on 83 minutes for Ferriby before Seidi thought he’d won a penalty for his side but the referee asked him to get up and played on two minutes later.  In the final minute Simon Russell’s shot was deflected on its way through to goal.

But the final chance of the game fell to Dale Whitham.  The Chorley substitute was fed in by Adam Roscoe but he couldn’t find the target from close range as the ball flew over the bar.
