REPORT | Harrogate Town 4 Chorley 1

It was all change again in the starting 11 for Matt Jansen’s side as the gaffer opted to give Paul Jarvis his first start of the season, moving Adam Blakeman into the middle who replaced Josh O’Keefe who started on the bench.

O’Keefe was joined by Josh Wilson and Terry Gornall who lost their places to Dale Whitham and Marcus Carver respectively, after they were both rested against Curzon Ashton.  And there was a return to the bench for young Enock Likoy-Elumba, who has made the one substitute appearance against Salford City so far this season.

The Magpies were up against an unbeaten Harrogate side who had won two and drawn one of their opening three games and there was a disastrous start for Chorley inside three minutes when Matt Urwin brought down Jordan Thewlis inside his box as he ran through.  Urwin escaped the red card but he couldn’t stretch enough to deny Simon Ainge converting from the spot.

Whitham almost levelled after two minutes but his header from a Blakeman free kick went narrowly wide.  But the home side continued to put pressure on their visitors.  A shake of the head from the referee denied them a second penalty before a long range strike also went wide.

The Chorley defence dispelled another period of intense pressure from the home side and this allowed Walker to break from half way and he was very unlucky to see his pass to Carver cut out by a defender.  Whitham then won a free kick which was sent deep towards Scott Leather at the back post.  However, his knock down was cut out by James Belshaw in the Harrogate goal.

Despite that brief respite Harrogate were still on top as the game entered the second quarter.  Another break thankfully ended with midfielder Jack Emmett having two bites at the cherry with no success.

But Walker was unlucky a minute later when his 30 yard strike was comfortably gathered by Belshaw who watched it all the way.

On 32 minutes Chorley won a free kick 28 yards out and a good delivery by Blakeman was narrowly missed by the leaping Andy Teague.

As the half entered the final ten minutes Chorley enjoyed a decent spell of possession inside the Town half.  Teague sent a great long ball to Carver who played it back for Jarvis to cross which Walker got his head too but couldn't divert it towards goal before Whitham sent a diving header wide.

A minute later Challoner missed a golden chance inside the area as he let the ball bounce and lost possession when he should have struck first time with the goal at his mercy.

Scott Leather then gave away a free kick four minutes before the break but Emmett’s curling strike was wide.

With two minutes to go Teague sent a thunderous strike towards goal which was brilliantly saved by Belshaw down to his left but disaster struck again as, within seconds, Harrogate broke up field where a cross was brilliantly met at the back post by Ainge who unleashed a great strike to score his second of the game.

An early second half chance for the visitors came when Walker was fouled in a central position outside the area but the left footed strike from the free kick by Blakeman was no trouble for Belshaw.

That early pressure continued and Chorley eventually found a lifeline from a third successive corner as Marcus Carver tucked the ball between Belshaw’s legs to get his side back into the game after 53 minutes.

Five minutes later Chorley should have had the equaliser but an excellent cross from Teague was headed down and wide at the back post by Walker.

But ten minutes after the goal Chorley gave away a fee kick in a dangerous position.  And, even though that led to nothing, Jordan Thewlis struck the home side’s third goal with a great solo effort running into the box from deep.

Chorley, desperate to find a second before the game got away from, saw another excellent cross well taken by Belshaw.  But on 75 minutes, Scott Leather was adjudged to have brought down Leesley and was given his second yellow card and marching orders by the referee.

Five minutes before the end the home side sent a cross across the Chorley goal that was asking for a tap in before the next strike was deflected wide.  But Harrogate continued to press and a low strike from Thewlis outside the area was narrowly wide.

Ainge almost grabbed his hat-trick but missed the goal by a whisker sending his uncontested header wide of the far post.

But the fourth and final goal eventually came in the last minute of normal time as Town broke following a Chorley free kick and Thewlis was on hand to turn in a lay-back for 4-1.
