Chorley 2-1 Fleetwood Town (22/07/2017)

Saturday July 22nd
Pre-season Friendly

The Magpies were at Victory Park once again on Saturday as they were aiming for their first home win of pre-season.  Fleetwood Town’s Development Squad were the visitors for this latest friendly match writes Chris Park.

In a relatively quiet opening it was the visitors who created the first chance after nine minutes with a well-worked move which ended in Michael Duckworth’s strike being tipped over the bar by Matt Urwin.

Soon after Josh Wilson could have given Chorley the lead but his header sailed wide of the post before Josh O’Keefe broke the Fleetwood defensive line but his effort also went inches wide.

Scott Leather was on hand when Fleetwood charged forward for their next chance and his superb tackle on the edge of the box stopped play short.  Half way through the half the visitors had a goal disallowed for offside and Alex Reid was unable to collect with the trialist’s cross into the six yard box.

Chorley’s best chances of the half came after half an hour when Wilson’s strike was tipped away by goalkeeper Billy Crellin and Andy Teague couldn’t keep a header down from the resulting corner.

Fleetwood enjoyed another spell which saw a strike sent straight at Matt Urwin and another disallowed goal for offside, but the move of the half fell for the home side when Stephen Jordan’s searching found O’Keefe who played it right to Terry Gornall whose first-time strike was wide.

The second half got underway with a goal inside three minutes.  There was a hint of offside when Ashley Nadesan scored from close range but the goal stood.

After a flood of substitutes from both sides Chorley got back into the game and Scott Leather’s strike from outside the area was deflected away before it got to Crellin in the Fleetwood goal.

Jason Walker tried his luck from on the right side of the box but scuffed his shot wide before Marcus Carver saw a header sail straight into the arms of Crellin after connecting well with Jordan’s long cross.

In the final ten minutes of the match Chorley finally got the goal they deserved when Carver’s cross was met by Walker’s head and the ball went in off the post.  And four minutes later he was at it again to give his side the lead with great header from a corner.

As the game entered stoppage time, Ritchie Branagan was almost caught off his line when Fleetwood’s Michael Donohue sent a 40-yard lob towards goal but Branagan was able to watch the ball sail wide.Starting XI: Matt Urwin, Matt Challinor, Adam Blakeman, Andy Teague, Scott Leather, Stephen Jordan, A.
