Despite taking a two-goal lead and playing against ten-men for just under an hour, the Magpies let slip two vital points against a physical Alfreton Town squad.
Chorley went into today’s game with the squad already stretched thin, but after 90 minutes of football it was left a breaking point.
Matt Jansen’s squad was already without both Andy Teague (broken toe) and Louis Myers (cruciate ligament) when the disastrous news on Friday that Sam Ashton (cruciate ligament) would miss the remainder of the season. Added to this was the absence of Sefton Gonzales (abductor) and Stephen Jordan (calf) while Will Beesley was a doubt following a knock picked up on Monday night at Curzon Ashton.
On the morning of the game Dale Whitham was taken ill, but managed to play than after 90 minutes of football both Jake Cottrell and Kieran Charnock picked up injuries; Jake a dead leg and more worryingly Kieran suffered a fractured eye socket in a clash with Alfreton player Paul Clayton, which the home player received a justified red card. Kieran’s injury meaning he will likely be missing for up to 8 weeks.
Back to the action and Chorley opened the scoring when Jason Walker converted from the spot on 29 minutes to give the visitors a deserved lead after a foul on Cottrell.
Shortly after this Clayton received his dismissal and before the break the lead was doubled when Walker netted his second, slotting home from inside the box.
After the interval, and with a man advantage, everything was looking good for the Magpies especially as loan signing Shaun Rowley had hardy seen the ball let alone be tested in the goal.
With a quarter of an hour to go the game should have been wrapped up, but young-full back Waqas Azam, playing in midfield since his introduction for Whitham just minutes earlier, blazed wide from close range.
With three minutes remaining, the home side netted through a head from George Edmundson off a corner for a not so much deserved consolation goal but into injury time, salt was poured into the many wounds when the same player, on loan from Oldham Athletic, netted again.
