Chorley’s latest pre-season outing ended all square against Evo-Stik League side Trafford.
Trophies are not handed out in pre-season and today’s sessions will be one of those that lives short in the memory. Both sides put in a good display, but the passion, drive and eagerness to win was as ever in these games lacking.
With keeper Sam Ashton unavailable due to holiday and deputy Jack Cookson injured, AFC Blackpool keeper Adam Caunce was drafted into the number one shirt on a temporary basis.
However, the big news before kick-off was the former Barrow striker Jason Walker has agreed terms with the club for the coming season and it was Walker who had the first chance of the game, flicking on a Paul Jarvis cross with Luke Pilling gathered comfortably.
Caunce proved to be worth the shirt with two good saves in quick succession, keeping out efforts from Nicky Platt and Kingsley Williams before Andy Longford lashed over from close range.
Caunce then denied Aaron Burns before Scott Leather, rising like a salmon at the other end was denied when heading a Dale Whitham corner at goal by Pilling.
After the restart Walker outpaced a defender, but the exposed Pilling saved well and soon after the keeper on loan at Trafford from Tranmere palmed clear an Andy Teague piled river form 20 yards.
With an hour on the clock Sefton Gonzales was fouled just inside the box and the referee awarded the Magpies their fifth penalty of the season, but Josh O’Keefe blotted his spot kick record when he fired against the bar form 12 yards.
It wasn’t long before Chorley did take the lead, Gonzales rounding a defender to slot beyond Pilling on 67 minutes, but the lead lasted only 7 minutes as Trafford levelled from the spot and the ball was slammed straight down the middle of the goal.
Both benches started to tinker with their line-ups and former Burnley and Nelson full back made an impressive appearance, powering down the right past defender and crossing onto the box for Jordan Connerton, but the striker could only side foot over from 8 yards.
Keiran Charnock went closed with a header at the back stick, so close some Magpies fans thought it had gone in, then in the final minutes Walker was fouled, a penalty awarded and the new signing followed O’Keefe by failing to score, the impressive Pilling saving well.
