Chorley kicked off their 2016-17 pre-season in style with an empathic win over West Lancashire Premier Division side Euxton Villa writes Josh Vosper. A brace from Sefton Gonzales helped the Magpies on their way whilst further goals from Adam Roscoe, Josh O’Keefe and trialist Adam Edgar sealed the victory.
Matt Jansen’s men started the game on the front foot, dictating possession and forcing the Villa defence into problems. Recent signing Marcus Carver was the first to cause havoc after hitting a tame shot with just seconds on the clock. Although the Magpies took the lead three minutes later through Gonzales. Paul Jarvis drove the ball to the ex-Stockport County striker who progressed to the edge of the box and lofted confidently over the Euxton goalkeeper. On 5 minutes the away side made it two. After some lovely build up play the ball landed to Adam Roscoe who unleashed a thunderbolt from 25-yards out to nestle in the top corner.
It would be fair to say Chorley were all over the home side and Paul Jarvis could have made it three but saw his acute effort sail just over the bar. On 12 minutes Jarvis yet again danced through the defence, which resulted in him being tripped in the box. The referee had no other alternative than to point to the spot. Up stepped new signing Josh O’Keefe, who slammed the ball into the left hand corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance. Goalkeeper Jack Cookson was forced into action just after the half hour mark but he did well to push away an effort from 20 yards.
On 36 minutes Jake Cottrell had a golden chance to score but saw his shot hit the side netting. As time ticked away the home side created a few half opportunities to reduce the deficit but nothing really troubled the experienced Chorley backline. Two minutes before the interval Chorley carried their momentum forward and added a fourth through Gonzales. Jarvis provided the perfect cross for the striker who expertly headed past the goalkeeper, despite him getting a hand to the ball.
The Magpies made plenty of changes at the break, as the familiar faces of Will Beesley, Jack Lynch, Dale Whitham and Jack Dorney entered the fray. It was indeed one of the subs who grabbed a fifth as trialist Adam Edgar headed into the back of the net after a perfect cross from the left. The National League North side were coasting and continued to press the Euxton defence with Edgar at the centre of the action. His defence splitting ball found the path of Dorney who hit just wide.
On 63 minutes Jansen made another change, introducing ex-Magpie John Cunliffe to the game, who hasn’t changed much, dazzling players with his pace and power. After 65 minutes Edgar was fouled which resulted in a free-kick on the edge of the box. Up stepped Will Beesley who was unlucky to see his effort land just over the crossbar. As 20 minutes remained Cunliffe nearly rolled back the years, but the effort was tipped away and went just wide of the far post. A. Trialist also nearly made it six, although his looping header hit the bar. The last chance of the game came from Dale Whitham who slid a shot wide of the post.
All in all it was a good work out for the players and I’m sure Matt Jansen will want to build on this performance going into Saturday’s game against Preston North End. Don’t forget, the game against the Lilywhites will take place at The Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium at 3pm as we compete for The Jack Kirkland Trophy.
