Chorley secured a record 17th Lancashire Cup at the expense of Lancaster City, Paul Jarvis scoring the winning penalty in a shootout at the Macron Stadium writes Jack Wynne.

Lancaster City took an early lead, Zach Clark firing home from close range after Craig Carney’s shot was parried by Sam Ashton.

City took the lead inside two minutes, Clark poking home at the back post following Carney’s blocked shot after Ryan Winder’s corner kick.

James Dean diverted Jake Cottrell’s effort beyond Mike Hale to level the scores eight minutes before the interval.

City were back in front just a minute later, Carney striking a powerful shot past Ashton into the bottom right corner from the edge of the box.

Andy Teague looked to pull Chorley level but he diverted Dale Whitham’s free-kick straight at Lancaster goalkeeper Mike Hale.

20 minutes played, Jack Lynch diverted Dale Whitham’s cross from the right straight over the bar.

Lynch blazed a shot straight into the stand from the edge of the box after some good work by Jake Cottrell inside the area.

Just after the half hour mark, Teague latched onto Cottrell’s free kick from distance before glancing a header narrowly wide of the left-hand post.

Billy Akrigg looked to double Lancaster’s lead, his curling effort from outside flying wide of the target.

Dean levelled for Chorley in the 37th minute, diverting Cottrell’s low shot beyond Hale.

City restored their lead less than a minute later, Carney rifling in on the volley from outside the box.

Akrigg tried his luck from distance but his arrowing shot sailed straight over the bar.

Dean spurned a good chance to draw the Magpies level once more, firing straight at Hale from inside the box after Jordan Connerton’s through ball.

Winder rattled the cross bar in the 55th minute, after Chorley were caught on the break.

At the other end, Hale produced a stunning save to deny Adam Roscoe’s driven free-kick from outside the box.

64 minutes played, Clark did well to work an opening from close range but his shot was comfortable for Ashton.

Clark almost diverted Jacob Gregory’s cross from the right beyond Sam Ashton but his header was straight at the Chorley stopper.

Substitute Darren Stephenson looked to test Hale, diverting Whitham’s cross straight at the City goalkeeper.

71 minutes played, Ashton made a point-blank save to deny Akrigg’s low effort from six yards following Gregory’s right-hand cross.

Stephenson levelled the scores in the 73rd minute, tapping in the rebound after his first strike from the penalty spot was saved by Hale, Ricky Mercer appearing to handle Jordan Connerton’s shot.

Roscoe rifled a shot wide of the target from outside the box after a good spell of pressure from the Magpies.

Jack Dorney blasted an effort straight over the bar, much to the delight of Hale after Stephenson’s headed pass.
