Northwich Victoria secured a narrow 2-1 victory against Chorley last night at Victory Park writes Jack Wynne.
Just before the interval and Andy Bond put Chorley ahead, his free kick from distance evading everyone, including Vics keeper Mason Springthorpe.
Into the second half and Northwich had a penalty after Andy Teague was controversially adjudged to have tripped Brian Summerskill in the box.
Richard Bennett stepped up and slotted the ball into the back of net, before substitute Aboubacar Sanogo headed in the winning goal with just over ten minutes left.
The first half an hour saw neither keeper called into action but Chorley were the more dominant side in terms of possession.
Moments later Teague went close to breaking the deadlock, latching onto Bond’s free kick from near the half-way line, but his header inside the box was straight at Springthorpe.
36 minutes played and Teague had another chance to test the Northwich keeper when he latched onto Max Cartwright’s throw-in but his header landed straight into the hands of Springthorpe.
Four minutes later and Chorley made all that possession count when Bond’s free-kick from long-range found it’s way into the back of the net.
Jake Cottrell went close to doubling the hosts advantage just three minutes later, hitting a powerful shot from outside the box, but Springthorpe pulled off a fine save.
48 minutes gone and Northwich were awarded a penalty despite Teague appearing to be nowhere near Summerskill.
The Chorley captain protested his innocence but the referee pointed to the spot and Bennett duly stepped up and brought the Vics level.
At the other end and Teague almost turned provider, fizzing a cross across the face of goal which just missed Chris Doyle running in at the back post.
66 minutes played and Teague found himself in the opposition area once more, looking to pick out Doyle again but the ball just skipped past the Chorley defender.
Doyle was almost at fault in his own area but Summerskill failed to capitalize on a scuffed clearance four minutes later and the teams were still level.
Darren Stephenson had another chance to test Springthorpe after evading two Northwich players but his shot from inside the box was too close to the Vics keeper.
Doyle narrowly missed another opportunity to put the Magpies in front, as he failed to latch onto James Dean’s cross along the six-yard box.
79 minutes gone and Ryan Astles was allowed time and space to flash a cross into the box and there was Sanogo unmarked to head Northwich in front from close range.
Into injury time and Dean almost levelled the scores but his shot from inside the box was deflected and was diverted the wrong side of the post.
