Chorley 1-2 Boston United 08/11/2014

Saturday November 8th, 3pm

Former football league side Boston United ended the Magpies impressive 14 game unbeaten home run that dated back to March 4th, running out the deserved winners by the odd goal in three.

Preparations before the game were not ideal.  Dale Whitham suffered from illness overnight and was only passed fit to play just prior to kick-off, then just ten minutes into the game a hammer blow was struck to the home side when captain Andy Teague suffered what looked like a potentially long term knee injury and had to be withdrawn.  With the only recognised defender on the bench being left-back Adam Mather, the enforced switching of personnel meant more square pegs than round ones were available to slot into the round holes at the back.

Early exchanges saw Boston put the ball in the net on just two minutes, but the goal was disallowed for offside.

Following Teague’s withdrawal Chorley lost their shape and composure at the back, with Boston’s pace causing problems throughout.  The deadlock was broken just after the half hour mark when following a fast break down the right flank Dayle Southwell headed in a cross at the back post.

Throughout the game Boston were a threat with their pace and passing constantly causing problems, while their strength and organisation at  the back kept James Dean, Josh Hine and co quiet.

Danijel Nazic, who has been impressive since his arrival on loan from Burnley, struggled in the second period with a pulled thigh muscle and relied on Tom Smyth for all goal kicks - I’m sure it states in “Sods Law” somewhere that if you don’t name a substitute keeper you are exponentially more likely to see your number #1 pickup an injury!

Boston doubled their lead on 57 minutes when a shot from Kaine Felix took a deflection off Mark Ross which wrong footed the struggling Nazic.

Darren Stephenson and Chris Almond were introduced in an attempt to wake the slumbering Magpies; and after several yawns they finally came to and Mark Ross volleyed in a goal to get the home side back in the game, however as we were already into the third of four added minutes it was a case of too little too late!
