On a night of exhilarating non-league football, a Jack Dorney goal on fifteen minutes sent Chorley to the top of the Vanarama Conference North.
The night started in sombre fashion with a minutes silence held for two Magpies; former club captain Phil Marsden, one of the heroes of the 1986 FA Cup side and long-time supporter Roy Gillett.
When the game kicked off it was an open and end to end encounter form the start with both side fashioning openings, but it was Dorney’s strike after quarter of an hour that proved to be the match winner.
Following a North Ferriby corner, striker James Dean launched a clearance from the home side area to the half way line, finding Darren Stephenson, whose excellent ball control and pass released Dorney. The tricky midfielder advanced forward, rounded keeper Adam Nicklin and slotted the ball inside the near post to the delight of the +1000 attendance at Victory Park.
Both sides continued to server up a feast of football with Chorley fashioning the better chances in the first half but were unable to add to their lead.
After the break the visitors stepped the up pressure, and especially so after the withdrawal through injury of influential skipper Andy Teague but Magpies keeper Sam Ashton was in inspired form pulling of several top class saves included a point blank range block from a header form lanky striker Tom Denton.
Full credit to both sides for playing an excellent game and also to the supporters for turning out in their droves! Barring Bank Holiday’s and fixtures against the likes of FC United and Chester, tonight’s attendance of 1,024 was the first midweek four figure league attendance at Victory Park in many many years (well before the arrival of Garry Flitcroft) - any team that can attract supporters in these numbers at this level of football truly has a fantastic fan base.
