CHORLEY put in a top draw performance against the creamed of English youth football and were unlucky to end this match on the wrong end of the result against Nicky Butt’s Manchester United select XI.
It looked like the Magpies were going to get off to a flyer through wingers Carlos Roca and Tom Ince.
Right winger Roco tried to chip Peir Luigi Gollini in the visitor’s goal from wide, 30 yards out, but his effort looped just over the bar.
One three minutes Ince was fouled just inside the area. He picked himself up to take the spot kick but gave Gollini an easy save.
Almost from straight away Sam Ashton was called into action to make a smart save, then just minutes later he gathered well at the third attempt while under pressure from the United front two.
Just after the quarter hour United struck. Louis Rowley was in the right place at the right time to slot home a rebound off Ashton after the keeper failed to hold a Tom Lawrence shot.
Darren Stephenson, putting in another impressive performance, forced a save from Gollini then Ince thought he’d levelled!
After a great move involving Roca, Jake Cottrell and Stephenson, Dale Whitham shot from the edge of the area, with Ince heading in from close range, only to see the assistant flagging at the far side.
Ashton denied Lawrence at one end before Tom Baker forced a save from Gollini at the other, then Whitham and Stephenson got into good position but failed to find the back of the net toward the end of a fantastic first half.
After the restart the Whitham looped a shot over and Keil O’Brien made a tackle inside the box Bobby Moore would have been proud of.
Andreas Pereirra was shown the only yellow card of the game for two fouls in quick succession, the second for blatant dragging down substitute Ahmadi Porya.
The trickle of changes at the start of the second period then became a flood and the fluidity of the match disappeared, though Chorley continued to press with Josh Hind looking a threat with his direct attaching running causing concern.
Whitham raked a shot across the face of the goal midway through the half, then with the final whistle approaching Porya tried too hard after beating two men, his shot was something of a slap rather than a blast!
