FC United of Manchester 1-3 Chorley - 09/03/2013

Saturday March 9th, 3pm

THE Magnificent Magpies ended FC United 10 game unbeaten run in the league to dent the home sides title credentials and keep their own play-off hopes alive.

Goals from Dale Whitham, Andy Russell and Adam Roscoe sealed the visitor’s fifth win in six games and the clubs first win at Gigg Lane in front of over 2000 supporters.

Chorley had the better of the early exchanges with Whitham glancing a Tom Ince cross narrowly wide, but at the other end Ashley Parillon cleared a home attack.

Andy Russell entered the referee’s book on 16 minutes following a hefty challenge, the first of two yellow cards in the match, both going against the Magpies.

Ince was the next to try his luck but his shot that came following a perfect Parillon ball was blocked in the area.

The Magpies finally and deservedly took the lead on 33 minutes.  The impressive Tom Baker played the ball into the box, Russell nodded it across the face of the goal for Whitham to nod home from close range.

Following the goal FC upped a gear.

They almost levelled on 37 minutes but Jack Cudworth pushed a shot against the post and responded quickly to push the ball to safety for Russell the clear to deny the hosts, but there was little he could do a minute later.

Following a soft free-kick the ball was pumped into the box and landed nicely for Matthew Wolfenden to fire home from 8 yards.

In injury time Adam Jones almost headed the hosts in front, beating centurion Andy Teague in the air, but the header went wide of Cudworth’s upright.

After the interval Chorley again started the stronger and regained the lead on 53 minutes, again from close range.

Tom Ince crossed into the box, but the home defence failed to clear their lines and Russell had an easy tap in from 2 yards to send the travelling 200 or so Magpies supporters in to raptures.

Again after going behind FC found another gear, but other than midfield possession and balls around the edge of the box they created few clear cut chances and eventually the Magpies wrestled control of the game back.

The clinching goal looked to come straight off the training ground.  A throw-in routine between Russell, Ince and Jarvis ended with a cross into the box and Roscoe on hand to end the contest.

The introductions of Mike Norton, Rhodri Giggs and ex-Magpie Matt Walwyn failed to spark the home side as the Magpies coasted to victory.
