Buxton 1-1 Chorley - 24/03/2013

An equalising goal from Darren Stephenson fifteen minutes from time was the least the Magpies deserved in a game where they dominated possession on the hard and bobbly surface in Buxton.

The result means the play-off dreams of Chorley all bit gone, if only our form in the latter half of 2012 was half as good as 2013 thing would certainly be different!

Lee Morris put the home side in front with a fortuitous goal on 26 minutes, his shot taking a wicked deflection, the spin of the ball and a bobble or two helping the ball find the inside of Jack Cudworth’s upright with that was Buxton’s first chance on goal.

Prior to this Stephenson (on the end of a Tom Baker freekick), Jamie Vermiglio (volley), Andy Russell (chip) and Dale Whitham (header) all had chances to put Chorley ahead.

After scoring Buxton sat deeper in a bid to nullify the Chorley attack and to sit on the win, which would have kept their own faint hopes of the play-offs intact for at least another 24 hours.

After the restart, and kick-up the Silverlands hill, Chorley regained the ascendancy, looking for a way back into the match.

Ahmadi Porya had the best opportunity, but his shot on the turn on 51 minutes failed to trouble home keeper Tom Turner.

When the goal arrived, with Stephenson slotting home from a long Mark Ross goal, it was the least Chorley deserved and was the ex-Southport strikers 6th goal since his return from Haig Avenue, his fourth in the last five games and his twelfth in total for the Magpies this season.

Starting XI: Jack Cudworth, Mark Ross, Andy Russell, Andy Teague, Keil O’Brien, Jamie Vermiglio, Dale Whitham, Tom Baker, Darren Stephenson, Ahmadi Porya, Cameron Darkwah

Chorleyfc.com Man of the Match: Camron Darkwah, after a slow start to the game, his pace and movement kept the home defence on their toes.
