CHORLEY lost a game they should have won having twice taking the lead against 3rd placed Ashton United.

John Cunliffe gave the Magpies a dream start, netting the opening goal after just 40 seconds, then Tom Ince scored from the spot on 25 minutes to retake the lade after Ashton equalised through leading scorer Aaron Burns on the quarter hour mark.

In the second two goals in two minutes turned the game around as Ashton went in front and moved up to second and send the Magpies down to sixth.

Cunliffe’s opening inside a minute gave the large travelling contingent hope, with recent results not the best that a corner may be about to be turned.  The skilful striker received the ball inside the area and jinked and turned make space for a shot in to the corner leaving keeper Paul Phillips stranded.

Ashton’s equaliser came from a left wing cross that was glanced in beyond Jack Cudworth’s reach, and came a couple of minutes after they should have levelled but the striker somehow missed the target from a perfect cross when it looked easier to score

Keiran Walmsley forced a save from Phillips with a smartly hit free-kick just after Ashton’s equalisers as the Magpies looked to regain the lead.

The second Magpies goal came from the spot by Tom Ince, who slotted in calmly.

It might have been three-one but or the width of the woodwork.  Cunliffe played a superb cross field pass direct to Kirk Millar’s feet, the Oldham loanee then crossed, Adam Roscoe headed on and Ince drove at goal but saw his shot rattle the crossbar on 37 minutes.

After the interval Ashton missed two headed chances that were almost identical to their opener, while at the other end Roscoe also missed a header.

The game turned on the hour mark when loan signing Chris Blackburn, perhaps tiring in his first game since August in a heavy gluepot pitch, slipped and was turned.  United broke and Chris Lynch got his name on the score sheet.

United, now with their tails up and with some Chorley heads starting to drop, then took the lead two minutes later from the spot after Walmsley was adjudged to have fouled just inside the area, Burns adding to his earlier strike.

Ashton continued to push forward with their pacey attack,, but Magpies Man or the Match Jack Cudworth was on top form to deny the hosts further goals.

In injury time substitute Ciaran Kilheeney almost grabbed a goal and with it a point, but his strike was saved by Phillips and that was that.
