Eastwood Town - 06/10/2012

Saturday October 6th, 3pm

Chorley returned to winning ways with a narrow away victory against a Eastwood Town side that defeated league leaders Rushall Olympic in their last Evo-Stik fixture.

A single strike from Chris Denham on 67 minutes was enough to seal the points and record a fourth away league win from five games, but the worry was the withdrawals due to injury of Adam Roscoe and Louis Barnes.

After conceding six goals in the last two matches it was great to see the defensive unit back on form to record a clean sheet, with returning captain Andy Teague leading by example in the centre.

Despite the Magpies having a bright opening to the game it was Jack Cudworth who was called into action first, palming a deflected shot to safety.

Adam Roscoe then received a nasty cut about his right eye which required hospital treatment on 12 minutes, Simon Garner replacing him from the bench.

For the majority of the game Eastwood changes were limited to set pieces, with Cudworth on top form to deny the hosts on each occasion.

At the other end, despite being solid at the back, the Magpies were not firing on all cylinders up front.

Darren Stephenson’s work rate was excellent but it looked like he had a defender shackled to him, or indeed riding piggy bag, being marked as closely as he was!  Ciaran Kilheeney too was tightly marked and they didn’t get the luck of the bounce, especially when he fired a shot against the foot of the post 15 minutes from time.

Jamie Vermiglio playing for only the fourth time this season had the best of Chorley’s chances, controlling a Denham cross on his chest before volleying narrowly wide on 32 minutes.

Denham netted the only goal of the game from 18 yards, his shot from a Stephenson cross taking a slight deflection of the Eastwood fullback to leave the keeper wrong footed at the ball rolled into the corner.

This goal seamed to spark the hosts into action and they started to press more from open play, but still Cudworth and his defence stopped everything, while at the other end Kilheeney and Stephenson looked to catch the Badgers on the break.

Ten minutes after the goal Barnes left the field as a precaution with what looked like a slight groin strain, hopefully he’ll be fit for action on Tuesday when Nantwich Town visit Victory Park on the back of a five-nil home defeat today against Worksop Town.
