Chorley 2-3 Whitby Town - 29/12/2012

Saturday December 29th, 3pm

The Magpies season of frustration continued with another defeat, this time against struggling Whitby Town.

The hosts put in a performance that wasn’t bad, but just wasn’t quite good enough and as in so many games in recent weeks failed to take chances that were presented, but also giving away soft goals at the back.

Jamie Vermiglio, injured on Boxing Day but also suspended was joined in the stands by Dale Whitham who was suffering from the flue, so Simon Garner returned to the starting line-up for the first time since October and was partnered in the engine room by captain Andy Teague.

John Cunliffe just missed the far post in the open minute as Chorley looked to build on the Boxing Day win.

However the the visitors took the lead after five minutes with their first forward move of the game.  Craig Farrell burst through the centre on the break and send Jack Cudworth the wrong way to put Whitby into a surprise lead.

The Magpies had changes to level the score but keeper Nick Liversedge was in fine form.

Town doubled their lead on 39 minutes when Graeme Armstrong picked up loose ball and slotted home after Cudworth failed to hold a shot from distance.

In injury time at the end of the first first half Darren Stephenson scored from 20 yards in simiar style to boxing day, a low hard hit drive into the corner.

Into the second half and the Magpies just couldn’t raise their game enough and Whitby regained a two goal advantage when Alexander White riffled in the goal of the game which had supporters and players alike stood watching as the ball arrowed into the far side netting from 25 yards.

Stephenson hammered a shot against the post and a Tom Ince cross/shot skimmed the post as the Magpies pressed for a goal.

Ahmadi Porya reduced the arrears a minte from time, but the additional five minutes wasn’t enough time to find an equaliser
