Chorley 2-0 Nantwich Town - 08/09/2012

Saturday Sepember 8th, 3pm
FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round

CHORLEY cruised through to the second qualifying round of the FA Cup following this straight forward win over league rivals Nantwich Town.

Goals from Ciaran Kilheeney and Darren Stephenson in the opening five minutes of the second half were enough to end the tie as a contest as Nantwich failed to trouble the Magpies defence on a sun baked afternoon at Victory Park.

However despite have the majority of the ball, Chorley themselves failed to test visiting keeper Jon Brain, with balls into the box often missing the attackers or being cleared by the overworked defence.

Chris Denham, playing on the left flank, whipped in the first of many Chorley crossed, and to set the tone for later attempts as his second minute centre flew across the face of the goal missing everyone.

Adam Roscoe and Stephenson saw attempted headers nicked away by Brain and Kilheeney could have done better when put through one-on-one with the keeper, but he delayed his shot and allowed the defence to whip the ball away.

Ten minutes from the break Nantwich had their first attempt on the break, but Jack Cudworth gathered an easy save, then four minutes later he took another routine save after some slack passing at the back gifted the visitors with a chance.

With the clock running down Kieran Walmsley slung a long throw into the box, the ball evaded everyone and after a single bounce Brain had to tip the ball over the bar to prevent conceding a soft goal.

After the restart Chorley came out of the blocks flying.

Tom Ince, covering at left back, was hacked down as he brought the ball forward, however the referee played an excellent advantage and Andy Teague squared the ball into the box giving Kilheeney the simplest of tap ins.

Stephenson the netted the second and his fourth in three game on loan. He showed great strength and awareness to hold off a challenge on the edge of the area before beautifully lobbing Brain into the far corner.

Adam Roscoe thought he’d added a third when he finished of a crisp passing move, but somehow the linesman flagged the midfielder offside.

Roscoe the nocked on the Nantwich door twice more as Chorley ensured their passage to the second qualifying round for the first time in three seasons.

All eyes will be on the FA’s website in Monday lunch time to see who we face on September 22nd.
