Chorley 1-0 Buxton - 20/08/2011

Saturday August 20th, 3pm

CHORLEY maintained their 100% start to the season and retained top spot in the league thanks to a 72nd minute penalty from ace marksman Steve Foster.

Garry Flitcroft had to rearrange the line-up for today’s game with Jamie Vermiglio and Chris Denham both missing out due to injuries, with Tom Williams and Lee McEvilly both coming in for their first starts.

Buxton arrived and departed Victory Park with the opposite record of the Magpies, having now lost their opening three fixtures, all by a single goal margin, and going off today’s battling performance it won’t be long before they start to grind out results as they kept the Magpies at bay for long periods.

In fact the opening hour of the game was an even midfield battle with the defences snuffing out any embers of attack.

Buxton had the first chance of the game when Karl Colley headed over from close range with Russ Saunders will position. The Magpies responded with first of all Shelton Payne sprinting from deep, but being dispossessed on the edge of the 18 yard box, then Williams swinging a cross over the box, but no one could get on the end of it.

Foster then crossed from the right flank to Dale Whitham, but last season’s joint top scored sliced his half-volley wide and is still looking for his first of the new season.

Saunders calmly collected an attempt direct from a Buxton free-kick, then Andy’s Russell and Teague couldn’t convert a brief spell of head tennis into a goal at the other end.

Foster attempted to chip from 20 yards, but it sailed harmlessly over the bar then Russell was unlucky not to score from six yards, but his attempt at redirecting Foster’s shot was easy for the keeper.
Into the second half and Teague saw a shot cleared off the line very early on.

With an hour on the clock McEvilly made way for former PNE winger Simon Whaley.

Saunders was alert on his line to hold a headed attempt.

Tom Walker then replaced Payne on the left.

With a stalemate looking likely, Foster collected the ball just inside the area and as he attempted to wriggle free from his marker was tripped. He dusted himself down to dispatch his third penalty in three games, making a total of five goals for the season.

There were other chances later in the game, with Adam Roscoe misdirecting a header for the hosts, then at the far end deep into injury time a toe poked efford sailed narrowly wide.
