Chorley 3-0 Cammell Laird 26/03/11

Saturday March 26th

A three goal salvo in the first half was enough to see of a limited Cammell Laird side in front of 565 people who decided NOT to watch England!

Chorley took the lead on 23 minutes with the quick thinking Matt Jansen the creator and the clinical Steve Foster to scorer. After visiting keeper Josh Molloy had handled the ball just outside the area Jansen took a quick free-kick with the keeper out of position, sliding the ball to Foster who reacted quicker than the defence to Jansen and slotted home.

The second goal saw Dale Whitham follow up a blocked Jansen effort and smash the ball home beyond Molloy, his nineteenth of the season on 33 minutes.

Five minutes later the third was netted by Jansen who out jumped the keeper to head home a deep cross into the box from Foster, return the earlier favour.

Preparations for the game were disrupted with midfield the duo of Steve Flitcroft and Jamie Vermiglio both missing due to injury. Manager Garry Flitcroft reacted to this by changing the midfield shape to a diamond with Nathan Fairhurst played the holding role, Dale Whitham and Tom Ince in the wide positions and John Cunliffe at the point behind to two forwards. This new system worked a treat in both attack and defence with Chorley dominating the game.

The only downside to the game was the loss of Cunliffe after just half an hour due to injury, inflicked in an incident which resulted in the former MLS star picking up a yellow card, however Jack Dorney comfortably slotted into the role.

Chorley had other chances to score. Cunliffe headed over early on, Dorney had an effort saved, Molloy blocked a Foster blast form a tight angle and Mark Houghton chipped just over the bar from the edge of the box. At the other end Lloyd Rigby had just a single save to make in the 90 minutes and it was one for the cameras as he acrobatically saved a shot from distance. However he almost came up a cropper as he fell when back peddling to receive the ball, however his luck was in as is bounced off the post!
