Trafford 0-4 Chorley 12/02/11

Saturday February 12th

Chorley dominated this game right from the kick-off, and following the opening goal it was only a matter of how many they would score in the remaining 84 minutes.

The answer to that question was four, with strikes from Andy Russell, John Cunliffe and Dale Whitham following up Andrew Teague’s opener, but it could have been many many more.

For long spells throughout the game Chorley ‘owned’ the ball with Trafford having very little possession.

The opener came courtesy of Teague heading home a Tom Ince corner in the 6th minute. It took until the half hour mark for the second to come, and this time it was Teague’s central defensive partner Russell who shot on the turn into the far corner following a Jerome Fitzgerald long through.

The third and fourth goals came in quick succession after the restart. First of all in the 50th minute livewire striker Cunliffe bravely poked home at the near post from an excellent quick free-kick from Ince, then a minute later Whitham netted his seventeenth goal of the season, lobbing the keeper from just outside the box.

Despite this being the end of the scoring, there were numerous other chances throughout the game. In the first half Nathan Fairhurst saw a drive blocked, Cunliffe hit the side netting, Adam Roscoe headed straight at the keeper and Cunliffe was then unlucky to be flagged for offside when one-on-one with the keeper. Trafford mustered one shot, which appeared to go in off the post, but it was just the way the ball rebounded of the wall behind the goal!

In the second half Roscoe dinked and effort over the bar, then when through saw one shot blocked before squaring to Whitham who also fired over. Fitzgerald powered a header over from a Lee Shillito corner, Mark Ross fired wide after steaming forward from defence, Matt Jansen crossed into the box and the ball rebounded to safety off the underside of the bar before in the final stages Ince and Shillito both tested the keeper.

Trafford had a goal chalked off for off-side and missed the chance to net from the spot following a foul by Russell. Lloyd Rigby earning his keep, diving to his right to save.
