Clitheroe 0-2 Chorley 14/09/10

Tuesday September 14th, 7.45pm

The Magpies came out worthy winners in the top v’s second clash at Shawbridge with both goals coming in three first half minutes.

With around 150 travelling supports swelling the attendance on this wet Tuesday night, the visitors were first out of the blocks with a Mark Houghton shot getting deflected to safety.

Clitheroe, with five ex-Magpies in their line-up, something the home supporters neglected to think about while chanting “are you Genesis in disguise”, started on the back foot but slowly clawed their way into the match with Mark Jackson heading against the bar on twenty five minutes.

Prior to this Clitheroe attack it was all Chorley, with Tom Ince and Jack Dorney pulling the strings on the wings, and Chris Simm and Houghton stretching the defence with their pace.

Following the Jackson effort the game was won. Ince darted into the box and curled his cross around former Chorley defender Chris Smalley to Dorney, who headed home from eight yards.

Minutes later it was almost two as another Ince cross was headed narrowly wide by Houghton, but the second goal was only a minute away.

Jamie Vermiglio picked up possession just inside his own half and played a peach of a ball onto the wing to the feet of Simm who cut into the box and slammed a shot at goal. Proctor in the home goal could only parry the shot into the path of Houghton who finished form six yards.

Dale Whitham had the final shot of the half, blasting one of what seemed dozens of balls to leave the Shawbridge stadium during the ninety minutes!

Into the second half and the Magpies were well in control and coasted to the final whistle without breaking sweat. There were a few half chances for the Magpies to stretch their lead and at the other end Aaron Grundy had the easiest 90 minutes of the season.

Meanwhile at Irongate, Chester but the home side to the sword and recorded an impressive 5-0 win against a side that hadn’t conceded in the league until tonight. This win moves Chester into second spot, three points (and four goals) behind the Magpies with a game in hand... Next stop, the Deve Stadium!
