Chorley 1-2 Lancaster City 20/02/2010

Saturday February 20th, 3pm

Tony Hesketh plundered raided Victory Park once again, this time to collect three rather than half a squad of players!

The Dolly Blues, with four of last season's Magpies squad in their ranks, continued their romp toward promotion, but had to fight every step of the way against a Chorley side that has made massive strides since out three-nil defeat at the Giant Axe back in November.

The first half was pretty even and it looked like the side were going in level at the interval until the UniBond's top scorer Jordan Connerton (ex-Magpie) received a free-kick and slotted home past Zac Hibbert from close range just second before the break.

Before the goal, both sides had chances, with Alex Porter blasting at the keeper and Adam Farrell (ex-Magpie!) hit the side netting.

Almost immediately after the restart play was halted as a fourth official had to be found due to the referee injuring himself.

When the game eventually got back under way, Lancaster tested the stand-in officials with string claims for a second goal with ball cannoning off the underside of the cross bar.  Neither the senior linesman promoted to referee or stand-in linesman confirmed the ball cross the line so to the disbelief of the visiting players, officials and fans the 'goals' did not count.

Shortly after Alex Porter struck, nodding home from close range following a half cleared Reece Kelly corner.

Both sides pushed for a win, but the more clinical finishing abilities of the blues always made them look the more likely to score again, and it was that man Connerton, with a few scouts again watching his progress, who netted ten minutes from time to give his team a six point cushion at the top of the table.

One bright not of the day was the excellent attendance, which was 284 higher than Lancaster City's last home game - imagine if we'd had the season they're having!?!
