MATCH REPORT | Chorley 0-1 Harrogate Town

The Magpies suffered their first home league defeat since August as Harrogate scored late to secure all three points in a game of few incidents.

Team news

Matt Jansen made two enforced changes to the side that lost at Southport on New Year’s Day with Will Beesley and Matty Hughes coming in for injury victims Adam Blakeman and Scott Leather. The visitors were also forced into two changes as Jack Vann and Toby Lees replaced the suspended duo of Will Burrell and Terry Kennedy.

First half

Chorley enjoyed much the better of the first half with the visitors valiantly standing firm. Will Beesley was the first Magpie to test the reflexes of James Belshaw in the Harrogate goal, executing a one-two with Matty Hughes before unleashing a left-footed drive that the goalie pushed behind. Hughes played architect again to put Marcus Carver clear, but Belshaw produced a stunning save from an acute angle. Carver had a second chance to open the scoring, but couldn’t get his shot away, and Hughes also couldn’t find a way past Belshaw after working an opportunity for himself on the edge of the area.

Harrogate’s only reply of the entire half came from a Mark Beck header that Matt Urwin plucked out of the air.

Second half

The second 45 minutes was a different story as Harrogate came out with more conviction. A number of attacks came to nothing before a deflected Joe Leesley free kick hit the back of the net but was ruled out for offside.

Jordan Thewlis tested Chorley’s number one with a snap shot, and from the resulting corner the ball fell to Louis Swain whose close-range effort was smothered on the line by a grateful Urwin.

There was nothing Urwin could do about Harrogate’s next effort nine minutes from time, however. Thewlis got the ball down the right-hand side, and his deep cross sailed over the keeper and into the far corner of the net for his tenth of the season.

Leesley should have made it two with a couple of minutes left, but after winning a penalty following a Challoner tackle from behind, the number 11’s spot kick was well saved by Urwin.

Unfortunately the outcome was unaffected.
