REPORT / Stockport County 1 Chorley 1

The magpies came into this game hoping to get their season back on track after claiming just one victory in the last five games in all competitions.  Victory today could propel Chorley back into the Play-off positions ahead of another break from league action next weekend when they visit Grantham Town in the FA Trophy.

Matt Jansen gave Matty Hughes his first start in the league, coming in for Stephen Jordan, and Jason Walker was given a starting place ahead of Jake Cottrell.

A late, late equaliser from Stockport County’s Jason Oswell denied Chorley what should have been a victory after he scored after the allotted added on time to cancel out Nick Haughton’s earlier goal.

A blistering start from both sides in the opening five minutes saw County muster the first chance within seconds but Bohan Dixon scuffed his strike wide from outside the box.  Marcus Carver then tried to meet Matt Challoner’s cross six yards out but was denied by a defender getting in his way and soon after Dixon again shot wide.

The referee waved play-on after County shouted for a hand ball inside the Chorley box and a great ball over the defence by Hughes allowed Walker to race into the opposite area but he couldn’t keep his shot down.

Nick Haughton was the next to test the County keeper when he forced a save from Ben Hinchliffe with a first-time strike off Adam Blakeman’s corner.  Four minutes later Josh O’Keefe gave away a free kick and Matty Warburton shot wide from 30 yards.

Matt Urwin produced a fantastic save to keep Chorley in the game on 30 minutes.  County won a corner which was whipped in from the right – Jason Oswell got his head to it at the back post but was denied by a fingertip save.  Minutes later Oswell headed the ball into the Chorley net but the assistant had his flag up for offside.

Five minutes before the break Blakeman finds Carver free inside the area and the Chorley striker tried and lob Hinchliffe but sent the ball inches wide.  Haughton then sent a free kick wide two minutes later.

An end-to-end start to the second period saw both sides push for the opening goal but the best chances fell to Haughton and Blakeman – Haughton wormed his way across the edge of the box but saw his shot blocked and Blakeman forced a diving save from Hinchliffe.

Blakeman then won a free kick 20 yards out which Haughton took and Hinchliffe had to punch away.  Andy Teague then had a rare sight on goal but sent his strike wide from a tight angle that only needed a touch from a team mate to divert into the net.

County substitute Darren Stephenson won a corner off Teague just after the hour mark before Hinchliffe pulled off two great saves to deny Hughes and Carver.

Haughton came close again to opening the scoring with 16 minutes left but couldn’t keep his shot on target.  Two minutes later Walker’s header from close range had to be tipped over the bar.

Haughton finally got the opening goal on 83 minutes after a controversial decision by the referee who didn’t award County a free kick inside the Chorley half – the Magpies subsequently broke upfield and Haughton fired home into the bottom corner.

However, despite the referee indicating a minimum of two minutes of injury time County snatched an equaliser in the third minute of added time from Oswell.
