FA CUP | Chairman ready for clash

The Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium will be bouncing tomorrow as we welcome Boston United in the final qualifying round of this season’s Emirates FA Cup. Matt Jansen’s men have beaten Stalybridge Celtic and Ashton Athletic to get to this stage of the prestigious competition, whereas Boston have beaten Haughmond in a third qualifying round replay after being held to a draw at York Street by the ninth tier side.

Victory for either side will send them through to the first round proper of the competition, something which the Magpies haven’t achieved for 27 years. Chairman Ken Wright is hopeful of reaching the first round proper and making yet more history as his side did in 1986, when they reached the second round. He said: “What we did on that cup run built the foundations for the title winning season we had the following year. It built the structure for years to come. The buzz that it created, not only at the club but throughout the town was astonishing.”

The Magpies chairman is hopeful the club can repeat, if not do better than the Chorley side of 1986, who beat Wolverhampton Wanderers in the first round second round replay to set up a tie with local rivals Preston North End. He added: “The history of the FA Cup is like no other competition. The attention it grabs from people all over the world is astonishing. It’s an opportunity for non-league sides like ourselves to pit their skills against league opposition, which is hopefully the position we'll be in come 5pm on Saturday.”

The Magpies opponents, Boston United, currently sit in 19th position in the Vanarama National League North, winning only three of their opening 13 league matches. One of those wins was, however, against Chorley back in August, so Matt Jansen’s men must remain vigilant if they hope to progress and make some more history.
