If you missed Matt Jansen’s post-match interview with the Chorley FC media team after Saturday’s 3-2 victory over AFC Telford United here’s a brief run-down of what he said.

The Magpies came through a nervy encounter at the Chorley Group Victory Park Stadium on Saturday holding out for a 3-2 victory having seen a man sent off and losing a two goal lead early in the second half.

And because Matt Jansen’s side managed to grind out victory he said after the game that he was “delighted with the character, the team, the togetherness and the strength” his players showed.  “The way we managed to win that game was probably more pleasing for me than the game running out and maybe finishing at 2-0.”

The manor of the result reminded Jansen of last season.  He added “I said to the lads after the game that this was us last season, this was why we were so good last season and what it’s all about in terms of grinding out results which is exactly what we did.”

Talking over the game he said “it was tight at the end and I thought we started slowly if I’m honest but at times we played like a Premiership football team.  We strung passes together, created a few problems for Telford, and on another day we could have scored more in the first half.”

It was the second period that proved to be the nail-biter for both sets of supporters.  After coasting into a 2-0 lead before half time Adam Anson saw a straight red card for a foul inside his area which handed Telford the chance to reduce the deficit.  “It was a little bit frenetic after that and they managed to get the second goal in a matter of minutes and it was backs to the wall.

“We consolidated and stuck with it and tried to relax the players which I think we did and managed to get ourselves in front with a good goal from Marcus Carver which gave us the another lead.  Then it was a case of holding on to that lead as they threw everything at us with us only having ten men.”

Jansen touched on Adam’s sending off; admitting that at times the laws of the game can be confusing.  “Whether it’s a sending off, I don’t know.  We’ve had both ways where it’s been a penalty and a sending off and we’ve had it where it’s been a penalty and no sending off.

“To be fair to Adam he was playing out of position – he’ a right-sided centre half playing on the left due to injuries – so it was difficult for him.  But he gave a solid defensive job in the first half and unfortunately was caught napping in that instance.  He’s tried to recover and may have tugged at the lad’s shirt, but thankfully it wasn’t too harming because we ended up getting the result at the end of the day.”

Jansen hailed the form of his strikers over the past few games.  “In terms of the strikers it’s been fantastic that they’ve started scoring goals.”  He said.  “We’ve had Marcus scoring three in the last two or three games, we’ve had Jason Walker scoring four in four, and Josh Wilson has five in five.”

A corner has been well and truly turned after the frustrating opening few games and Jansen added: “We’re starting to score goals and create chances.  I’m pleased we’re starting to be more dangerous in the opposing third and that’s great.  It’s more exciting for the fans as well, so hopefully they’ve enjoyed that aspect of it, but we are still solid at the back which we were again on Saturday until the sending off.”
