Preview | Stalybridge Celtic

A 2-0 defeat away to Blyth Spartans on Tuesday night ended a run of three consecutive victories in the National League North for the Magpies.

Matt Jansen’s side will take a break from league action this weekend as their FA Cup journey begins.  They’ll make the much shorter trip to Bower Fold to face Evo-Stik Northern Premier League Premier Division side Stalybridge Celtic on Saturday afternoon.

Following Tuesday’s defeat Chorley slipped down a place to twelfth in the league, amassing 15 points from their 11 games so far, but victory tomorrow against a side struggling for form in the division below can kick-start a much desired run in the world’s oldest cup competition.

Celtic are struggling in the Northern Premier League so far this season having won just twice in their opening nine matches to give them six points and a 23rd place standing.  However, Steve Burr’s men did knock out fourth placed Farsley in the previous round to set up this tie.

Jansen and his squad have openly cited a good cup run as one of their main desires this season alongside gaining promotion so won’t want to slip at the first hurdle this weekend.

The Magpies last reached the First Round Proper way back in the 1990-91 season (where they then progressed to the Second Round Proper for only the second time in their history) and the dream is to get there once again.

There’s a long way to go before the players can think about a dream tie against a top Football League side but anything can happen in the FA Cup.
