REACTION | Harrogate Town 4 Chorley 1

Most fans will agree that Tuesday was a difficult result to take, none more so that Chorley manager Matt Jansen.  He gave us his views after the match.

“We got off to slow start gifting them the penalty which they scored from but then I felt we had loads of chances in the first half” Jansen thought.  “Their second goal came from us attacking ironically, but in terms of chances created in the first half I think we had as many, if not more than them, and maybe some even more clear ones apart from the penalty.”

Taking that as the major positive from the first period he asked his players during the break for more of the same.  The players rallied to the call and he added: “I said if we get the next goal we were very much back in this game and we did that.”

But the Magpies shot themselves in the foot as Jansen said: “We lost the ball in an attacking position again and all credit to the lad, it was a fantastic solo effort to score the third, and it was a sucker punch after getting so quickly back into the game.”

After playing so well for a decent period either side of the break that third goal was a real sucker punch which was compiled even more so by Scott Leather’s sending off which Jansen confirmed he will look at again.  “I felt that the sending off was questionable as he’s adamant that he won the ball and a lot of people were saying that he did.  So once we’ve had another look we might appeal it.  Whether that will be successful we’ll have to wait and see.”

Once the side went down to ten men it was backs against the wall and Jansen admitted that it was difficult for his players to come back into the game after that.

Despite the 4-1 score line Jansen was full of praise for the way his lads played during that spell either side of half time.  He was particularly impressed with Adam Blakeman who he had moved into midfield following a string of changes made to the starting 11.  “We put Adam there as we felt we could get him on the ball more and I said at half time that we can utilise him more and more.  He got into pockets where he got the ball deep and was on it again further up the field.

“But we seemed to force that third and fourth pass when we got into good areas rather than using him again.  The odd time that we did we created some good chances from it.”

On making those changes Jansen stated: “four games in 11 days is tough for any player so that’s why I made the changes again.  It was just to freshen things up and give the lads who haven’t played so many minutes a chance and a run out.  That was the plan and they did well.”

Jansen ended with a promise to the Chorley faithful.  “It’s difficult to take positives from a game that you lose 4-1 but, I’ve said it before, I just wish we had a little bit more composure when we’ve got the ball.  We don’t have to rush things so much.  We get into good positions and sometimes try to pick a killer pass and run at players, which we did a couple of times in the first half, and the defenders backed off.  But we sometimes lack a bit of composure and we’re working on that so hopefully we’ll get better over the next few weeks.”
