REACTION | Chorley 0 Salford City 1

Chorley may have lost by a single goal but Matt Jansen insists there is still plenty to be positive about following last night’s set back against the title favourites, Salford City.

When talking to Chris Park, Jansen stated: “My first reaction following the defeat was that you don’t always get what you deserve in football.  If they’re the favourites for the league and we perform like that throughout the rest of the season we’re going to win a lot more games than we lose.

“I asked the lads after the game to summarise how they thought they’d played compared to the game against Kidderminster and they said they played as well, if not better.  We got the result against Kidderminster but we didn’t get the result against Salford so that shows you that football doesn’t always go the way you think it should.”

He added: “There is a bit of luck involved in football and we didn’t get the rub of the green or the bounce of the ball last night.  We were far better than Salford in my opinion.”

Another positive that Jansen took from the match was another great performance against a side that will be challenging for honours come the end of the season.  “They’re favourites to win this league and I felt we showed how strong we are and how good we are as a footballing team and from my point of view I thought we were excellent.

“Even their manager said to me at the end of the game, how we’ve managed to win that game is beyond me, and that says it all.  Our work ethic, our determination, our desire and how we play were all outstanding but it just wasn’t to be our night.”

But Jansen did feel disgruntled about the amount of free kicks that were awarded against his side:  “We recorded 17 awarded to Salford in the first half against our one, and the second half was not much better.  Yes they got the sending off and they were backs against the wall from that point but I still think it was unbalanced overall.”

The gaffer confirmed that there wasn’t any particular downfall in his side’s performance but felt that “maybe if we created a little bit more decisive, clever play we could have opened them up a bit better, but in terms of balance of play we more than deserved to win that game.”

Jansen hopes the lads can brush this disappointment off and get their campaign back up and running this Saturday when Curzon Ashton visit Victory Park!
