MATCH REPORT | Darlington 2-2 Chorley

A dogged performance from Chorley ensured a vital point on the road on Saturday, with a 2-2 draw at Darlington.

The Magpies fell behind twice at Blackwell Meadows but refused to give in, and equalised through Adam Blakeman’s first time effort and Jason Walker’s goal from close range.

Delial Brewster, starting his second match since joining on loan from Chesterfield, went clean through on goal on two minutes, but mistimed his shot from an acute angle, with the shot hitting the side netting.

At the other end moments later, Matt Urwin made a fantastic save with his feet, as a ball was played through to Darlington’s number 10, Josef Wheatley. His shot was miraculously saved by the diving Urwin, and bounced clear.

The home side then took the lead just after 15 minutes. The impressive Reece Styche beat the offside trap after a well timed ball. He fired his shot into the roof of the net, above Matt Urwin and ran to the byline, jumping into a mound of snow in celebration.

The Magpies responded and equalised on the half hour mark through Adam Blakeman. Some fantastic hold up play by Jason Walker allowed Blakeman the time to run straight towards goal from the left wing back position. Walker passed the ball to him, and Blakeman hit it first time towards the far corner. The goalkeeper got a touch on but couldn’t prevent it reaching the bottom corner.

Immediately after the restart Darlington took the lead through Stephen Thompson’s penalty. Josef Wheatley danced in the penalty area, and Andy Teague stuck a leg out, with Darlington’s number 10 going over. Thompson took the penalty well, tucking it away to Urwin’s right hand side.

Chorley equalised for the second time in the match 15 minutes from time. Some great play from substitute Marcus Carver down the left hand side, allowed him space to cross the ball to the oncoming Walker, who was able to tuck it into the near post. Walker’s celebration mirrored that of Styche’s earlier in the match, with the former Barrow man jumping into a pile of snow off the pitch.

Minutes after Carver’s fantastic efforts on the far side, the forward was shown a second yellow card on the near side and given his marching orders after poor challenge having lost the ball.

Despite a frantic end where both sides pressed for a late winner, including a Josh O’Keefe effort forcing a stunning save from Aynsley Pears in the Darlington goal, the match ended level.

The Magpies welcome the National League North’s bottom side, North Ferriby United to Victory Park on Saturday.
