The Magpies will be unable to defend the LFA Challenge Trophy as they suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to neighbours Bamber Bridge.
Chris Marlow scored the only goal of this second round tie on the hour for the Northern Premier League side, and Brig were able to hold out a place in the quarter-finals.
Chorley: Eccles, Challoner (Meppen-Walter, 64’), O’Brien, Lussey, Anson, Jordan, Glynn, Whitham (c), Wilson (Carver, 69’), Noble-Lazarus (Lenehan, 52’), Cottrell. Subs not used: Lee, O’Keefe.
Bamber Bridge: Rigby, Dawson (Spooner, 64’), Dodd, Lawlor (c), Charnock, Churchman, Waddecar, McKnight, Vasey (Carsley, 90’+1), Argent-Barnes (Dudley, 82’), Marlow; Subs: Young, Griffith.
The first chance of the match fell to Reuben Noble-Lazarus who found space on the edge of the box but shot wide before a Bamber Bridge free kick was sent wide of Danny Eccles’ goal.
Jordan Lussey won a corner for the Magpies on 19 minutes after his cross is deflected wide, and from that Adam Anson got a final touch with a header which sailed wide.
A minute later Eccles had to be big to stop Stuart Vasey getting more on his touch after a mistake in defence by Chorley. Dale Whitham then narrowly missed the target from a free kick 45 yards from goal.
Matthew Argent-Barnes came close to an opening goal for the visitors but couldn’t connect with a decent cross from the left and fired wide from close range. Three minutes later Eccles was on hand again to turn on the spot and save a deflected shot by Vasey from just inside the box after Stephen Jordan sent a loose header into his path.
Three minutes into the second half Jordan should have done more with his header in front of goal from Whitham’s corner but couldn’t guide it on target, but the only goal came just after the hour. Marlow ran on to a fine pass from Chris Churchman to fire in at the near post from a tight angle.
A few minutes later Argent-Barnes forced a save from Eccles after his strike spun off the surface into the keeper’s hands.
The Magpies seemed to be struggling to stay in the game at this point and on 75 minutes a mistake from Anson allowed Bamber Bridge another excellent chance. Thankfully Marlow was unable to control the ball properly and Eccles dashed out to smother the chance.
With three minutes to go sub Marcus Carver had a golden chance to equalise but couldn’t get a touch on Anson’s low cross across goal and that was the final chance of note for either side.

That’s what he said
Overall, it’s disappointing, but we don’t want to dwell on it. Credit to Bamber Bridge, they turned up and got the result. Some of the lads will be disappointed that they haven’t played as well as they can, but there’s no worries about the team going into Sunday – Jamie Vermiglio
